Microsoft builds a new security processor, Pluton.

Pluton is a new security processor built by Microsoft in collaboration with AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm. This processor will be built directly into CPUs and replace the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). This processor is built on the advancements that Microsoft used on the Xbox One and Azure Sphere.

Currently, PCs have a TPM, which is traditionally a different hardware chip that is accountable for storing sensitive data on Windows PCs. These have been used for over 10 years by Windows Pcs, and nowadays in, security technologies such as Windows Hello and BitLocker. While TPMs are effective, attackers have found vulnerabilities, many of which take advantage of physical access to PCs.

On the other hand, Pluton works with existing TPM specifications and APIs. As a result, you can use existing TPM-powered features such as BitLocker and System Guard on Windows PCs with the Pluton chip. But the difference is that the physical processor itself will be built into the CPU, as a result, identities, credentials, encryption keys, and private data won't be able to be removed from Pluton processors, even if someone has physical access to a PC.

According to Microsoft and its goal for security in Windows 10 are, "Our vision for the future of Windows PCs is security at the very core, built into the CPU, where hardware and software are tightly integrated in a unified approach designed to eliminate entire vectors of attack. This revolutionary security processor design will make it significantly more difficult for attackers to hide beneath the operating system, and improve our ability to guard against physical attacks, prevent the theft of credential and encryption keys, and provide the ability to recover from software bugs". The public blog said.

the final question that arrives is about when we will this processor in action, As Microsoft announced at CES in 2022, Lenovo is the first PC maker to launch Pluton-powered PCs. The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 and Z16 are the first laptops to feature AMD’s Ryzen 6000 series and all Ryzen 6000 series processors will feature the Pluton chip.
